"He had tied a bit of white worsted round his neck. . ." (86)White worsted is a European fabric. Some say that this fabric represents the Europeans trying to control the natives. It is somewhat ironic because the native wears the fabric around his neck. This represents the choke hold that the Europeans would like to have over the natives of Africa. Throughout the novel, Conrad is constantly putting in symbolism with double meanings.
